While the majority of the American Jewish community supports continued U.S. monetary aid to Israel, a few of us strongly believe that this aid enfeebles Israel and makes it incapable of thinking and acting like a free and independent nation. Fearful of losing U.S. aid, Israelis too often ask, "What will America say?" and, as a result, repeatedly act against their own interests. We believe that Israel – just like an alcoholic or druggie -- will only learn to stand on its own two feet when the crutch it unhealthily relies on is taken away.
This position undoubtedly is a minority one in the Jewish community, but it can hardly be labeled anti-Israel. The late Rabbi Meir Kahane, founder of the far-Right Kach Party in Israel, publicly advocated it in the 1980s (see video of him in the Video section of this website), and the Zionist Freedom Alliance does so today. We take the liberty of quoting from its website, zionistfreedom.org:
"In addition to having no constitutional basis and being an unnecessary burden on the American tax payer, United States foreign aid has also impaired the national sovereignty of the State of Israel. The aid prevents the Jewish state from adopting economic reforms that would make her self-reliant and it creates a mindset of dependency among the Israeli people. A nation cannot be both dependent and independent. ZFA calls upon the government of Israel to stop behaving like the leaders of a vassal state and begin working towards the realization of true political and economic freedom. We also advise the US government to completely end foreign aid to all nations of the Middle East and to concentrate instead on rescuing the American economy from disaster."
Finally, we wish to note that Ron Paul has explicitly stated that he opposes U.S. monetary aid to all Middle Eastern countries (including Egypt which receives $1.5 billion annually) -- not just Israel. Ron Paul has no agenda against Israel. What he advocates is properly called non-intervensionisn, fiscal conservatism, and constitutionalism -- not anti-Zionism.
For the above reasons, we are convinced that Ron Paul is good, not bad, for Israel. (We also of course believe that Ron Paul is good -- nay, great -- for America, but this site is devoted strictly to Ron Paul and Israel.)
